Understanding the house edge in roulette is crucial for players who want to make informed decisions about their gambling strategies. The house edge represents the mathematical advantage that the casino has over players in any given game.

In American roulette, which features both a single zero (0) and a double zero (00), the house edge is approximately 5.26%. This means that for every $100 wagered, the casino expects to keep about $5.26 in the long run.

European roulette, on the other hand, only has a single zero (0), which reduces the house edge to 2.70%. This significant difference makes European roulette more favorable for players compared to the American version.

The house edge exists because the payouts for winning bets don\“t reflect the true odds of those bets occurring. For example, a straight-up bet on a single number pays 35 to 1, but the actual odds of hitting that number are 37 to 1 in European roulette and 38 to 1 in American roulette.
