Pakistan has a rich maritime culture with several traditional and modern fishing methods used in its coastal waters. Here are three common fishing techniques employed in Pakistani marine waters:
Gillnet Fishing: This is one of the most widely used fishing methods along the Pakistani coastline. Fishermen deploy vertical nets that hang like curtains in the water, trapping fish by their gills when they try to swim through. This method is particularly effective for catching pomfret, sardines, and other medium-sized fish species found in Arabian Sea waters.
Trawl Fishing: Commercial fishing vessels in Pakistan often use trawl nets, which are cone-shaped nets dragged along the sea bottom or through the water column. This method is used for catching shrimp, which is a major export product from Pakistan, as well as various bottom-dwelling fish species. The trawling industry is concentrated mainly in Karachi and Gwadar ports.
Longline Fishing: This traditional method involves using a main fishing line with numerous baited hooks attached at intervals. Pakistani fishermen use this technique to catch larger pelagic fish like tuna, kingfish, and sailfish. The method is especially popular among coastal communities in Sindh and Balochistan provinces, where it has been practiced for generations. |
