In poker, a set refers to a three-of-a-kind hand where a player holds a pocket pair in their hand and matches it with one community card on the board. This creates a strong hand that is often well-disguised, making it powerful in Texas Hold\“em and other poker variants.

For example, if you have two 7s in your hand and the flop shows one 7, you have made a set. Sets are different from trips, where a player has one card in their hand and two on the board to form three-of-a-kind. Sets are generally more concealed, leading to bigger pots when opponents don\“t suspect the strength of your hand.

Mastering when to play for sets is key in poker strategy, as pocket pairs can be valuable for their set-mining potential. Proper betting and reading the board help maximize value from this hand.
