The Indian Premier League (IPL) is a professional Twenty20 cricket league in India contested during March or April and May of every year by eight teams representing eight different cities in India. The league was founded by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in 2007.
IPL features some of the best cricket players from around the world, along with talented Indian domestic players. The tournament has become one of the most attended cricket leagues in the world and ranks sixth among all sports leagues.
Some popular IPL teams include Mumbai Indians, Chennai Super Kings, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Kolkata Knight Riders, and Delhi Capitals. These teams represent major Indian cities and have developed strong fan bases across the country.
The IPL follows a round-robin group and knockout format. Each team plays the other twice in a home-and-away round-robin format in the league phase. The top four teams qualify for the playoffs, which consist of two qualifiers, an eliminator, and the final.
Indian local products featured in IPL include team jerseys, cricket equipment, merchandise, and various sponsorship deals with Indian companies. The league has significantly contributed to the growth of cricket-related businesses in India. |
