Jennifer Lawrence on hairstyles and film roles
Jennifer Lawrence says there’s one look she still can’t pull off without being reminded of her most famous role.
While reflecting on how her movie characters influence her personal style, the 35-year-old actress admitted she avoids wearing her hair in a braid because it instantly brings people back to her Hunger Games days as Katniss Everdeen. Advertisement
Speaking with Harper’s Bazaar about her upcoming film Die My Love, Lawrence explained that she often picks up pieces of her characters’ style while filming.
“It happens every time,” she said. “It\“s something that I seriously have to keep in control. I see it happening while I\“m shooting, and then I look back at pictures and I\“m like, ‘Who is that?’”
She shared that her new character, Grace, a young mother struggling with postpartum psychosis, had a noticeable impact on how she dressed. “Grace was very influential. I noticed when I started to dress like her.”
But when it comes to Katniss, Lawrence says her fashion didn’t change much beyond one detail.
“Well, maybe not Katniss,” she noted.
“Although I can\“t put my hair in a braid without being like, ‘Oh, you want somebody to bring up the movie?’” Lawrence played the iconic heroine across four films from 2012 to 2015 and has said she’d be “totally” open to returning to the role.
Outside of her work, Lawrence says New York inspires her wardrobe the most. She enjoys noticing new silhouettes online and out on the streets, and she’s amused by the return of early-2000s fashion.
The comeback of layered looks, she said, is especially nostalgic for those who remember “the tank hanging below the shirt.”
While promoting Die My Love in New York City on Nov. 1, Lawrence shared that she drew from her own life to play Grace.
She has previously been open about dealing with postpartum anxiety. She recalled that parenting became harder after having her second child, saying the experience helped her approach the role with deeper understanding.
She also bonded with costar Robert Pattinson on set since both are parents to young children.
“Like any new parent knows, that’s the only thing you want to do is just, like, look at pictures and show people pictures and videos of [your] kids,” she said, adding that both of their babies were still very young at the time.
Lawrence is mom to Cy, 3, and a second son born earlier this year with her husband, Cooke Maroney.
She has previously recalled how overwhelming those early days were, admitting, “I just thought every time he was sleeping he was dead,” and that she constantly worried she was “doing everything wrong.”
Although her life, and style, evolves with each new chapter, one thing remains true, if Jennifer Lawrence wears a braid, someone is definitely going to mention Katniss. |
