 Afghanistan deals with deaths, destruction, after earthquake kills 20,leaving hundreds injured
Afghanistan again in crisis after a powerful earthquake shook Mazar-e-Sharif on Monday, November 3, 2025, killing more than 20 people and leaving hundreds seriously injured.

The magnitude of the earthquake was recorded as 6.3 while the depth of 28km was marked at the orange alert level, which indicates that more casualties can be expected, reports the U.S. Geological Survey （USGS）.

As reported by BBC, the earthquake was struck near Mazar-e-Sharif, one of the country\“s largest cities that is home to about 500,000 people.
The government health ministry officials informed that almost 530 people have been injured so far.
A Taliban government spokesperson, Haji Zaid in Balkh province shared that “many people are injured in the Sholgara district, south of Mazar-e-sharif due to the earthquake and most of the injuries were caused by people falling from tall buildings.“
Local media reported that as soon as the earthquake struck, Mazar-e-Sharif\“s residents immediately rushed to the streets as they feared their houses would collapse.
Moreover,the quake led to a power outage across the country including in the capital city Kabul, after electricity lines from Uzbekistan and Tajikistan - major suppliers of power to Afghanistan - were damaged.
Videos posted on X （formerly Twitter） appear to show debris strewn across the ground at the iconic Blue Mosque in Mazar-e-Sharif, built in the 15th century.
According to USGS, the earthquake was felt in regions of Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan, three countries that border northern Afghanistan.
Additionally, the quake on November 3, 2025 follows a 6.0 magnitude earthquake struck Afghanistan\“s mountainous eastern region in late August 2025, killing more than 1,100 people. |
