Tragically, Scales, best known for her role as Sybil Fawlty in the BBC sitcom Fawlty Towers, has passed away at the age of 93.
Her legacy spans the beloved series Mapp & Lucia and Seven of One, as well as films including The Boys from Brazil, The Lonely Passion of Judith Hearne, Howards End, and An Awfully Big Adventure.
She earned a BAFTA nomination in 1992 for her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II in Alan Bennett’s stage play A Question of Attribution.
Scales shared a celebrated partnership with her late husband Timothy West, whom she married in 1963.
The duo starred together in the 1987 farce What the Butler Saw and co-presented the travel documentary series Great Canal Journey.
Timothy, who passed away in 2024, had spoken about supporting Prunella through her battle with dementia.
Author and broadcaster Gyles Brandreth captured the royal encounter on social media, tweeting, “This is a snap I took last year of Prunella Scales with Queen Camilla at Lamb House in Rye we were celebrating Mapp & Lucia in which Pru had starred.
