A Bitcoin 50% attack, also known as a majority attack, occurs when a single entity or group gains control of more than 50% of the network\“s mining hash rate. This control allows them to potentially reverse transactions, double-spend coins, and disrupt the blockchain\“s integrity. Such an attack undermines the decentralized nature of Bitcoin, which relies on distributed consensus to secure transactions. However, executing a 50% attack is extremely difficult and costly due to the high computational power required and the economic incentives that discourage malicious behavior. As a result, while it remains a theoretical risk, the Bitcoin network has proven resilient against such threats over time. |
