But sadly, Ming-Na, now 61, revealed this week that her mom, who is 90, still “insults” her whenever she shares her achievements. Variety / Getty Images
Taking to X, the actor wrote, “When my mother can still trigger me with insults when I show her something I\“ve achieved. Yep, this is a reminder why I became an actor. Thank you to my fans for their love and support. I need you today.”

After being flooded with support, Ming-Na followed up, “Your lovely comments made me cry! So many of u related. It\“s both comforting & sad. I know my mom loves me, but we\“ll always lack a connection. That was always missing in my life. U all fill that void. I give each of you a big hug & love you all so much! TY!”

When later replying to an X user who highlighted all of her incredible performances, Ming-Na — who is of Chinese descent — noted that she was specifically talking about “having an Asian mom.”
Ming-Na’s posts have since sparked a raw discussion around cultural expectations and toxic parenting, with several internet users sharing their own similar experiences. One person wrote, “I got two Harvard degrees, married a Chinese-American doctor over 6’ tall who will be pulling 6-7 figures and adores me (and likewise), worked at one of the top law firms in the country if not the world, and it STILL wasn’t enough. They literally cut me off. So I’m not surprised at all that being a top actress doesn’t cut it. They truly have a hole in their hearts that nothing can fill. It\“s very sad.” Olivia Wong / Getty Images
“South Asian here and I feel you. I have 2 graduate degrees, going for another and have lived and worked around the world- coming from a statistically bleak upbringing. First thing my \“father\“ said after my 2nd grad degree was, \“So what? Still single. And what have you really done with your life?’” someone shared. Robin L Marshall / Getty Images
“I have a Chinese friend who married the doctor that literally saved her mother\“s life. He\“s Korean, from a wealthy family of all doctors, and has always seemed like a nice guy. She is an attorney and so smart that I use her as my human Google. Doesn\“t matter, her parents cut her off and don\“t speak to her because she got pregnant before they were married,” one person wrote.
Another user said, “Ming-Na is not Ming-Na, she is her mother\“s daughter who was supposed to listen to her and do exactly what her parents told her to do. It doesn\“t matter if she\“s one of the world\“s most recognized actresses and is wealthy beyond belief. She likely didn\“t fulfill some dream her mother had and is therefore a failure.”
“As a woman with a Chinese mother, this resonates. My mom can insult and compliment me in the same breath,” someone else said.
“It’s kinda bonkers that you can be one of the most successful Asian/Asian-American stars of all time, star in two of the most iconic films of all time, be an official Disney legend, still in high demand at 61, all while never having fucking aged a day and still have a parent like that. Can’t even fathom,” another person wrote, while one more user simply added, “Celebrities! They’re just like us.”
