From behind-the-scenes videos on set to cozy red carpets, Sydney and Glen’s chemistry was so palpable that it was widely speculated that they’d developed a real-life relationship while playing love interests in the film. Vitally, they were both in relationships when shooting began, and during the film’s promo tour, Sydney and Glen both addressed the rumors, but never explicitly denied that they were true. Sydney once even said that she and Glen were findng the whole thing “funny.“
To make matters more complicated, it was later claimed that the affair speculation was the catalyst for Glen’s 2023 split from his longtime girlfriend, Gigi Paris. But more on that later. Michael Tullberg / Getty Images
Dating rumors continued to follow Sydney and Glen, but in April 2024, they spoke out in a joint interview to confirm once and for all that the romance speculation had all been for PR, with Glen crediting his “very smart” costar for orchestrating the master plan behind the scenes. “The two things that you have to sell a rom-com are fun and chemistry,” Glen told the New York Times. “Sydney and I have a ton of fun together, and we have a ton of effortless chemistry.” Notably, he added: “Sometimes you just have to lean into it a bit — and it worked wonderfully.” Trae Patton / Getty Images
Glen is correct: The strategy did work wonderfully. Anyone But You grossed over $220 million worldwide.
Discussing the whole scheme, Sydney said in the same interview that she was personally blowing up PR “text group chats,” “keeping everybody over at Sony marketing and distribution awake at night because [she] couldn’t stop with ideas” for how they could seemingly capitalize on the dating speculation. “I wanted to make sure that we were actively having a conversation with the audience as we were promoting this film,” she said, “because at the end of the day, they’re the ones who created the entire narrative.” Alberto E. Now, over a year and a half later in a new interview with Variety, Sydney is continuing to ride the high of the 2023 film’s buzzy marketing strategy. Although she seemed to subtly contradict what we’d previously been told about the integral role they played in the marketing scheme, namely, Glen’s past comment about leaning into the affair speculation. “Honestly, the press did it themselves,” Sydney told the outlet, apparently insisting that “there was no leaning in, per se.” Maya Dehlin Spach / Getty Images
She continued: “Truly the tabloids and journalists just created it and kept going. Even if we were just standing next to each other, it was ‘They’re standing two inches apart!’ Glen and I genuinely care for each other and have a love and respect for one another. I love being with him. And I think people just truly saw a really beautiful pairing.”
I see what she’s saying about the press, but were they leaning in or not? Wasn’t she in “text group chats” with “ideas” about the affair “narrative”? Honestly, who knows. But it does seem that Glen’s apparent handling of the romantic speculation had some negative consequences in his actual relationship with his then-girlfriend, Gigi, who said earlier this year that the Sydney dating rumors made her feel like she was “just fed to the dogs.” Ethan Miller / Getty Images
“The bare minimum of any relationship is to have your partner\“s back. Where are you when you just need to stand up and say, ‘No, I would never cheat on my girlfriend. I wouldn\“t do that.’ That\“s all that needed to be said,” Gigi recalled on the Too Much podcast. Of Sydney and Glen, she said: “I don\“t know if there was a relationship there or not, but then they came out to say it was all a PR scheme at the expense of our relationship… I honestly hoped that they\“d end up together. Glen later responded to Gigi’s claims, telling GQ: “I will always have nothing but love for her and respect for her. Everybody’s always going to have their own narrative on things and all that. And she’s welcome to it. Relationships are really hard. And when two people break up, they each go to their own brunch and they will each tell their own narrative.”
Since then, Sydney has also broken up with her longtime partner and fiancé of three years, Jonathan Davino. She is now rumored to be dating Scooter Braun. Xny / Getty Images
