ABBOTTABAD:

The Surgery Department of Ayub Teaching Hospital has achieved a major medical milestone by successfully performing a rare and complex laparoscopic cholecystectomy on a patient suffering from Situs Inversus Totalis - a congenital condition in which internal organs are positioned as mirror images of their normal locations.

The surgery was led by Assistant Professor Dr Bahr Room, an expert in general, laparoscopic, and bariatric surgery, assisted by a skilled multidisciplinary team. The 48-year-old male patient from Mansehra, who had previously undergone coronary artery bypass surgery in 2017 and was diabetic, was admitted to the hospital with gallstones and acute gallbladder inflammation.

Due to the patient\“s rare anatomical structure and medical history, several hospitals had earlier declined to operate. However, the Ayub Teaching Hospital surgical team took up the challenge and, after detailed planning, successfully performed the intricate operation in Operation Theatre No. 1, Block B.

Dr Bahr Room said the procedure was particularly challenging because the gallbladder was severely inflamed and its location reversed, but precision and teamwork ensured a smooth and successful outcome. The patient made a swift recovery and was discharged the following day in stable condition. facebook twitter whatsup linkded email
