The European Super League was a proposed annual club football competition that would have featured top European clubs. The concept was officially announced in April 2021 but faced immediate and widespread criticism from fans, players, governments, and football governing bodies.
The proposed league would have included 20 participating clubs, with 15 founding members who would have permanent spots regardless of their performance, and 5 qualifying teams based on their domestic achievements. This format was heavily criticized for undermining the principles of meritocracy and promotion/relegation that are fundamental to European football.
Major clubs involved in the proposal included Real Madrid, Barcelona, Juventus, Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City, Tottenham, AC Milan, Inter Milan, and Atletico Madrid. However, within 48 hours of the announcement, most English clubs withdrew following massive fan protests and government pressure.
The competition faced opposition from UEFA, FIFA, national football associations, and domestic leagues. Critics argued that the Super League would destroy domestic football structures, reduce competitive balance, and prioritize commercial interests over sporting merit and fan engagement.
Despite the initial collapse, some clubs like Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Juventus continued to advocate for the concept, leading to ongoing legal battles and discussions about the future structure of European football competitions. |
