The Indian Super League (ISL) is the top professional football league in India. Unlike many European leagues, the ISL did not initially have a promotion and relegation system. This means teams could not move between the ISL and the I-League, India\“s other major football competition.
However, this changed recently. Starting from the 2022-23 season, a promotion and relegation system was introduced. The team that finishes at the bottom of the ISL standings now faces a playoff against the winner of the I-League. The winner of this playoff earns a spot in the ISL for the following season.
This system is designed to increase competition and give smaller clubs a chance to reach the top tier of Indian football. It is a significant step forward for the sport in the country, aligning it more closely with global football structures. |
