  James Gunn hints at ‘Supergirl’ being similar to ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’

James Gunn highly-anticipated film Supergirl, starring Milly Alcock, has confirmed its genre.

The upcoming film based on Superman\“s cousin is one of the major projects in the DC Universe along with Lanterns and Man of Tomorrow.

In an interview with the Rolling Stone, Gunn\“s was asked if the war between meta-humans and humans teased at the end of Peacemaker season two will come up in Lanterns and Supergirl.  

“No, no. Both those things are worked in,“ he said. “We knew both of those stories were a part of what we originally put together, so they’re part of the overall tapestry, but they’re also their own thing.“

While speaking about Supergirl, Gunn noted that it is “a space adventure“ like “Guardians“.

However, his hint about what to expect from the film should be no surprise, since space is a key element in the plot of the Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow comic.

According to the Direct, Supergirl will be the second movie in James Gunn\“s DCU and the fifth release in the Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters slate.

While specific plot details have not been revealed yet, the comic focuses on Kara Zor-El\“s quest in space, aided by Krypto, and is told from the perspective of the new character Ruthye Marye Knoll, an alien girl that Kara meets who is looking for justice for her father\“s death at the hands of Krem of the Yellow Hills.

The movie in addition to Alcock, will star David Krumholtz, Eve Ridley, Matthias Schoenaerts, and Jason Momoa as Lobo.

Supergirl will release on June 26, 2026.
