Eligible Countries for Green Card Lottery
The Diversity Visa Lottery program, commonly known as the Green Card Lottery, is administered by the U.S. Department of State to provide immigration opportunities to individuals from countries with historically low rates of immigration to the United States. Each year, the U.S. government publishes a list of eligible countries whose natives can participate in the Green Card Lottery program. Countries that have sent more than 50,000 immigrants to the U.S. in the previous five years are typically excluded from eligibility.
Some of the countries that have been eligible for recent Green Card Lottery programs include: Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Egypt, Nigeria, Brazil, Mexico, and many African and Asian nations. However, eligibility can change annually based on immigration patterns.
To participate in the Green Card Lottery, applicants must meet education or work experience requirements and must be natives of eligible countries. The application process is free and must be completed online during the designated registration period each year.
Successful applicants are selected through a random computer drawing and must then go through additional screening processes, including background checks and interviews, before receiving their diversity visas.
