Meanwhile, the Prince of Wales, who had been taking on a series of engagements leading up to the Earthshot Prize ceremony on Wednesday, appeared undettered in his mission as he spoke with vigour at the United for Wildlife conference.
Kensington Palace shared some key notes from his speech in which he announced “a new partnership between the Royal Foundation and the Coordination of Indigenous Organisations of the Brazilian Amazon, and The Podaali Fund - the first indigenous led fund covering the Brazilian Amazon Forest”.
The project is designed to protect Indigenous Peoples and local communities, environmental defenders in Brazil from growing intimidation, violence and threats to life. The future king emphasised that the initiative is focussed to work together with those “who know the land best”.
“This partnership will be guided by Indigenous leadership delivered through Indigenous mechanisms and focused on those most at risk,” William said, adding, “because only by working together can we protect those protecting the future of our planet’s ecosystems.”
The Amazon forest, dubbed as the lungs of the planet, have been under immense threat due to deforestation, wildfires and the impact of climate change, especially on the species that thrive there.
There are also a number of environmental crimes committed in the forest that needs urgent attention, and William highlighted their plans on the importance of curbing them as
“We must recognise and celebrate these protectors not just in words but through our actions and we must act together,” he surmised.
