As HBO moves forward with a new season of True Detective under returning showrunner Issa López, Harrelson made it clear he has no plans to revisit his Season 1 role alongside longtime friend Matthew McConaughey.Advertisement
McConaughey previously teased the possibility of reuniting, but Harrelson didn’t hesitate to shut it down during an appearance on “3rd Hour“ of Today.
“Matthew’s so funny. In fairness, never. No chance,” he said, adding that he’s happy to leave their original story untouched.
“Because it turned out great. I love that it turned out the way it did, and if anything, doing another season would, I think, tarnish that.”
Season 1, created by Nic Pizzolatto, followed Detectives Marty Hart and Rust Cohle (McConaughey) as they investigated the murder of Dora Lange over multiple timelines, eventually revisiting the case years later when new clues emerged.
The acclaimed season helped launch the anthology into prestige status.
Pizzolatto recently shared that both actors were “open” to returning and that he has “another story” in mind.
McConaughey echoed that sentiment, saying they were “keen on the idea but it’s nothing more than an idea,” and added, “If Nic puts something on paper that Woody and I think is good enough, it wouldn’t even be a choice. We would look at it and go, ‘it must happen.’ It’s gotta be damn good though because we set a pretty good precedent!”
Even though a return to True Detective isn’t in the cards, fans will still see Harrelson and McConaughey together soon.
Harrelson confirmed the pair are working on a new half-hour comedy and said he hopes viewers “dig it.”
