Hurricane Melissa, which strengthened and made landfall as a catastrophic category 5 in Jamaica, is now churning toward Cuba as one of the strongest Atlantic hurricanes in history.
The reports have been demonstrating extensive devastation to homes, hospitals and schools in southwestern Jamaica.
It has been observed that Western Jamaica is largely inaccessible after Hurricane Melissa smashed into the areas, knocking down trees and blocking roads with debris.
Jonathan Petramula, who is in Jamaica, told CNN that when morning came today, he was hopeful that the government and volunteers would be able to clear away trees and restore power and reach residents in Black River.
He further explained, “It’s a race against time because every day that passes, not only are folks that are injured or suffering, but the fact is that the world’s attention gets divided so quickly….”
Meanwhile, the Turks and Caicos Islands will also be impacted by Melissa’s outer bands, which are expected to bring severe tropical-storm conditions and up to 3 inches of rain that could cause flooding.
On the contrary, it is expected that Melissa will be moving effortlessly and begin to accelerate towards the northeast over open Atlantic waters.
It is expected that Melissa will be tracking towards Bermuda and retain hurricane strength by Thursday night, at which time it could deliver a violent round of wind and heavy rain.
The storm’s heavy winds will cause devastation to power and communications systems, and thousands of people will be displaced to emergency shelters. The recovery process will be slow and challenging.
