This TikToker Made A Video Comparing What Grocery Prices Were Like When Biden Was In Office Versus Now, And The Results Are So Disappointing
Hot Topic Full coverage and conversation on PoliticsDuring an August press conference ahead of the 2024 presidential race, Donald Trump promised that, if elected, he would lower grocery prices right away. “When I win, I will immediately bring prices down, starting on day one,” he said. /uploads/allimg/2025/10/8498641570581519761.jpgWin Mcnamee / Getty Images
After Trump became the president-elect, a TikToker called TheEggWatch was skeptical about his promise to make egg prices great again. So, TheEggWatch decided to do exactly what his name suggests — watch the eggs. More specifically, he wanted to see how a Trump presidency would affect their prices. /uploads/allimg/2025/10/5595406967077412021.jpgYrabota / Getty Images
“I felt that was a thing that can be easily proven true or false with documentation. So, that’s what I did,” he told BuzzFeed. @TheEggWatch / Via tiktok.com
Now, TheEggWatch doesn’t just follow how egg prices are changing in Trump’s America. He also tracks gas and general grocery prices. John M. Chase / Getty Images BuzzFeed Trending Hot Topic Let\“s chat about all things Politics See our Politics Discussions
On the final day of Joe Biden’s presidency, TheEggWatch went to a grocery store in New Jersey to purchase groceries. He took photos of everything he bought and what the prices were. @theeggwatch / Via tiktok.com
Recently, TheEggWatch returned to that same New Jersey grocery store and went shopping. He bought the same items as he had nine months earlier, and is comparing current grocery prices to January’s prices on his TikTok page. @theeggwatch / Via tiktok.com
The results are shocking if you had any faith that Trump would make good on his promise to lower costs. If you’re one of the many economists who predicted this would happen, the results are probably not surprising, but disappointing all the same. Win Mcnamee / Getty Images
Here’s how the prices changed:
The price of a bag of coffee at TheEggWatch\“s local store was previously $7.99. Now, it\“s $9.99 a bag. @theeggwatch / Via tiktok.com
On Jan. 19, 2025, TheEggWatch bought a pack of bacon for $7.49. Now, it\“s on sale for $8.99. @theeggwatch / Via tiktok.com
A pack of giant Hershey\“s with almonds was $3.99. Now, it\“s $5.29. @theeggwatch / Via tiktok.com
The store\“s tailless beef loin boneless New York strip steak was $13.99 per pound when Biden was last in office. Now, that same steak is $16.99 per pound. @theeggwatch / Via tiktok.com
Bananas went from $0.54 to $0.59, which is approximately a 9% increase. @theeggwatch / Via tiktok.com
Lean ground beef was $5.69 per pound in January. Now, it\“s $7.49 per pound. @theeggwatch / Via tiktok.com
And, finally: Chicken breasts were $4.99 per pound on Jan. 19, 2025. Now, they\“re $5.49 per pound. @theeggwatch / Via tiktok.com

“Everyone has a supermarket price horror story,” TheEggWatch told BuzzFeed. “This affects people in many different ways. For some people, that extra 20% grocery bill is a very large burden.” Andrii Yalanskyi / Getty Images
According to NPR, grocery prices have been consistently increasing since the pandemic, but August 2025 saw the largest jump in prices since 2022. And it doesn\“t seem like the increase will slow any time soon. Part of the reason we\“re seeing prices at the grocery store continue to rise is because of tariffs on imported goods, like coffee and olive oil. Justin Sullivan / Getty Images
In his comments, people are commiserating over how expensive things are. But, there’s one group of people still seemingly unwilling to acknowledge the root cause of the evidence TheEggWatch is providing. “Crickets from MAGA now. They cannot mention one policy or one change in the last nine months that has been better for any American citizen,“ someone commented. @theeggwatch / Via tiktok.com
One person wrote: “Can we stop kidding ourselves that this was ever about grocery prices?“ @theeggwatch / Via tiktok.com
“It\“s like what the world\“s leading economists said would happen is happening,“ someone commented. @theeggwatch / Via tiktok.com
“Any person on the right who has commented has only commented to defend Trump, or blame Biden,” TheEggWatch told BuzzFeed. “Many of them then say, ‘Well, presidents don’t control prices,’ but that’s exactly the point. Trump, the president himself, said, ‘I will lower prices.’ Whether a president can or can’t is a different debate. I’m doing this because he said he would.” Bloomberg / Getty Images

“It felt like facts have been forgotten and don’t seem to matter,” TheEggWatch told BuzzFeed. “Every day we just forget the craziness thrown at us from the day before, and we move on to the next crazy thing.” Nathamag11 / Getty Images
